Heel Yeah!

I really overdosed on Guinness and basketball this weekend, but it was totally worth it.

I'm still alive in the Paul's Poop bracket group (where everyone is a poophead), 'cause I'm 6th and still have a good number of my teams left (along with all my Final 4). In fact, I'm pretty good with teams like Vandy and Tennessee making me look like a genius, but teams like Texas and Wisconsin are making me look like Forrest Gump. But if Carolina can finally find a way to start putting teams away early in the second half, I'll be even happier.

Maybe I just need to repost my lovely assistant's picture again to boost the guys' morale or somethin'.

If this doesn't work, I'm banning the bitch.

Drunken Escapades: Issue #4: A full 8 hours of work

Just do what the banner says and no one gets hurt...

To honor tomorrow's observance of one of the sacred Holy Days, I present to you the gift of a "Drunken Escapade". Please enjoy it responsibly. And

HAPPY ST. PATTY'S DAY, BOYOS & LASSES.

A full 8 hours of work

Going away parties are usually fun. But they’re even more fun when it’s just 3 people taking off early from work and heading straight to the bar to have a few drinks. And it’s way, way more fun when all 3 of you put in a full work day (and a little overtime) of drinking at the bar and just get utterly annihilated.

Such was the going away party that Zeke and I had for David on his last day working with us.

Zeke and I had worked with David for almost a year but never really knew him. He was a co-worker, so he was automatically kept a tad at bay. But the weeks leading up to him quitting and the weeks after he quit made David instantly more likeable in Zeke and my eyes. Basically, he gave our boss a big ol’ “Fuck you” when she said he wasn’t doing his job to her satisfaction, and he quit. That made him a brother to us.

So on his last day, which still goes down as one of the least productive days of work I’ve ever had, David basically refused to let Zeke and I get any work done. Twist our arms, I know. And around lunch time, David basically said “Fuck it, I’m out. And you guys are coming with me.” So we did.

We three amigos went up to The Hat and had lunch and a few drinks, which ended up turning into dinner (read “more drinks”) and some more drinks (is that “more, more drinks”?).

We sat in the same booth and watched as table after blurry table sat down, ate, and left all through the day and night. In that work day I think that David consumed more rum than anyone who’s not a pirate should ever be able to, Zeke was probably the most hammered I’ve ever seen him except for at his going away party at The Hat, and I completely became Liquid Courage somewhere after my 7th or 8th big beer.

We were there long enough to have some of our student workers from the office come in for dinner and drinks, at which point David told Jacob that his girlfriend was “so hot”. Zeke and I both heartily agreed too (“So fuckin’ hot, man!”). Jacob being the coolest motherfucker we’ve ever met, just said “I know.” And later on he and his smokin’ hot girlfriend (who was also a student worker) came over and invited us to go to another bar just up the street to hang out with them for a while.

So the 3 of us decide to drive up the road to the next bar and hang out with the younglings. (PSA: Don’t drink and drive, kids. It kills. And sometimes leads to really funny stories. But mostly kills.) We get up there and we don’t spend a dime, because they bought us shots and drinks for the whole time we were up there. I vaguely remember being there, and the only clear things are playing a little Golden Tee and wanting to bitch about taking shots of SoCo and lime, but I couldn’t because they were free.

We’ve got to be pushing 10 or 11 hours of boozing at this point when either they kicked us out or we decided to take our leave. And for some reason, none of the 3 of us bothered to call for a ride. (Again, drinking and driving = bad) We all figure that we’re not as retarded as we actually were and decide to drive home. Zeke hangs a right out of the lot with the shortest distance to go. David and I take a Louie and head out in the same direction because we lived close to each other. David and I actually drive pretty well with the exception of I was concentrating really hard on him, so every time he weaved, so did I. I even made the exact same wide-ass left hand turn at a traffic light as he did right by his house. I was concentrating so hard on following David that I accidentally pulled into his complex and was about to park when I realized “Ummm… this isn’t where I live. Is it?” It wasn’t, so I had to finish the journey home solo.

I remember getting home that night and wishing that I had just parked and slept in that other parking lot, because I got a royal ass chewing from my girlfriend for driving home that freaking bombed.

I called Zeke and David the next morning to make sure that they were ok and that everybody made it home in one piece. Zeke did but had gotten a treatment similar to mine from his wife, and David just wished that I had driven over him because of how shitty he felt from his shiny, new hangover. Needless to say both of them cussed me out and hung up the phone when I asked them if they wanted to go have a beer.

It’s the Final Fourdown!

Do do do doo… do do do do dooo… do do do doo… sorry.

Allrighty, I finally got my picks done at just about the last possible minute for them to count over in Paul's bracket competition. I played it relatively safe this year with only a few upsets (I still maintain that a 9 over an 8 isn't an upset) here and there. But I’ve boiled my Final Four down to:

Florida
Kansas
UNC
Texas A&M

I know, I doubt that 3 #1 seeds will actually make it, but that’s how badly I roll. But down to the nitty gritty: who’s gonna be our eventual National Champion?

.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.

With a little help from my lovely assistant, Miss Antonella Barba, I present the 2007 NCAA Men’s Basketball Champion:

The University of North Carolina

I still think that the only team that can beat Carolina is Carolina, and they’ll be able to keep the ship right for the next 6 games. Plus, I wanted an excuse to be able to use that picture. Sue me.

Pick 'Em

Frak! I still haven't made my damned Tourney picks. Gotta get on that...

D

I’m a champion!

God I love that one.

“We’re talking about practice, man.”

Last night was the first of what will be many, short trips to Savannah in the upcoming months.

The Savannah Fire Department held a mandatory informational meeting about the written test and the CPAT (Candidate Physical Ability Test). It was mostly about what to expect, how to prepare, and also to answer any general questions about the hiring process and requirements. I really didn’t learn too much that I didn’t already know, with the exception of that even though the testing is in early June, the hiring/starting date probably won’t be until September. Awe. Some.

But, we did get what I was really hoping for, which was a chance to do a walk-through on the CPAT course and being able to actually get our hands on a few sections of the test:

- The 50 lb vest we’ll have to wear during the entire course (add 25 more lbs for the Stair Climbing portion)

- Randy, the mannequin for the Rescue portion

- The little, 10 lb sledge hammer we’ll use during the Forcible Entry portion

Let me just tell you this: Randy’s no joke. That guy is 165 lbs of pure, dead weight. And dragging his fake ass to, around, and from a barrel on concrete and asphalt will kick your ass. Even though I’m most worried about the stair climbing portion (which everyone says is the worst part by far), that fucker Randy has moved into the #2 spot easily.

So in addition to what I’m already doing at the gym, I’ll be spending as many Saturday mornings in Savannah practicing the CPAT in order to get everything down and improve my time. Not that how fast you complete the course matters. As long as you complete it in under 10 minutes and 20 seconds, you pass. It’s your written test scores that need to be high. The higher those are (and if you pass the CPAT), the better your chances of getting hired, or at least hired early.

So I have to brush up on my reading comprehension as well as put myself through the paces at the gym and on the practice course. And you know, I’m actually looking forward to practice right now... but we’ll see how long that lasts.

D

After I told him that practicing the CPAT every weekend was actually going to be fun for me, Chris said “Dude, you’re pretty much training to be an Avenger. That’s awesome.”

Dance Dance Revolution

Damn, is it that time of year again already? Really sneaks up on a brother sometimes.

So the brackets are out, Carolina won the ACC Tourney and secured a #1 seed (in the most difficult region as per usual), and I’m still perfect on my picks so far. All is right with the college basketball world. But I’m sure that’ll all change in 3 days or so.

In the interest of time (mine, not yours) and since I’m not all that wordy this morning, I decided to have us hop in the way-back machine and take a look at last year’s March Madness coverage here on "Screw Big, Dumb American!":

Dancing with 2 left feet…

The Fantastic Final Four

*sigh*… buncha assholes

Hulk smash puny, human Derek’s brackets

I haven’t set my picks for this year yet, and I also haven’t decided if I want to try and host the 2nd Annual Blogger Madness- which I would be doing seeing as how The Princess Hiker has vacated this particular plane of existence. So to quote the incomparable Fred Tollver, I’ve got “a little drinkin’ and a little thinkin’” to do on the subject.

But this year, as I was in 2005, I feel a lot more confident in my pick of North Carolina going all the way, so I've just got to set my other 3 from the Final Four and build around that. Just don’t expect another Fantastic Final Four-type post on my picks. That slice of awesomeness may never be replicated on this dingy, little blog. At least by me anyways.

And all together now: 1, 2, 3…

Happy Birthday, Brody!

The Future Overlord is now 5. And while I didn’t go and get him all liquored up and hire a prostitute, I did what could be considered the next best thing of giving him lots of scratchings, treats, and a chew bone that never stood a chance.

Maybe I’ll consider the booze and bitches a little more seriously next year. Or maybe that'll be my birthday.

So anyways... Happy Birthday, son. Daddy loves you.

3's a crowd

After watching Tommy and Kelley’s dog, Gus, for the weekend; I’ve decided to pull the emergency brake on seriously considering getting another dog. Not that Gus was bad or anything (aside from eating my flip flops, which was my bad for forgetting to move them); I just realized how much I take The Future Overlord being just like me for granted.

He’s as OCD about things as I am; and has our routines about going out, eating, playing, sleeping, etc down to a science. It’s to the point that he knows some of that shit better than I do. I think he has a furry, little PDA hidden on him somewhere that he checks when I’m not looking.

So to throw another dog into that Olympic-caliber routine would just completely piss one or both of us off. Now I just need to see about watching someone’s kitten for a weekend as a test run for that…

D

UPDATE:
The dog-sitting service continues as now I'll be watching Turner's dog, Winston, while he goes to Bike Week for a couple of days and nights.

Winston lovin' it up on a rugby ball.

Tales of Dickery: "And I quote Kermit the Frog..."

Very few times have I looked back on a bit of dickery and felt some sort of guilt only to be followed up by a sort of righteous ire because really, if anyone deserved dickery, it would be that person. That day, that person was Lando.

“And I quote Kermit the Frog…”
Zeke and I were bullshitting around with Lando down in Lando’s own private Cloud City of an office one day. And Lando is just going on about golf, his old stomping grounds, his fraternity, or maybe his big foreheaded wife; who knows. He’s just going on and I get up out of my chair and walk across the office to his bookshelf where he has all his personal items and decorations.

I pick up a framed quote from a beloved green amphibian, one Kermit the Frog, and proceed to read it aloud: “It’s hard to be green.”

“What the fuck? That’s not how it goes. ‘It’s hard to be green’? Hahahaha. It’s supposed to be, and I quote Kermit the Frog, ‘It’s not easy being green.’ Man, who fucked this one up? Framed it and everything.”

Lando: “…. My dad made that for me….”

Me: “Oh…well… it’s still wrong.”

Zeke: *laughing*
----

Kermit remembers fondly some of his own dickery inflicted on those two pricks, Statler & Waldorf.

Ah, a short bit of dickery for you. And not the last to be visited upon good ol’ Lando either.

D

UPDATE:
Zeke reminded me that no too long after this happened, Lando's father passed away. So my dickery was truly about as dickerish as you could get. That's actually Zeke's favorite part of the whole story. I'm a tad more compassionate than he is on this one. I've gotta say that my favorite part of the story is the "Man, who fucked this one up? Framed it and everything.” part.

The Terrible Twos

Well I'll be damned. This crappy little blog has made it to 2 years. I think that's like 18 in blog years, right? Guess I should get little SBDA drunk and find a hooker or something to help make him a man. Isn't that how it's done? I think so. I'm gonna be an awesome dad.

Happy birthday, little buddy.

D

All I got for my 18th birthday was a lecture and the Want Ads. You're getting this. And possibly herpes.

“Who would eat 30 sack lunches?” “I’ll tell you who. It was that damn Sasquatch.”

A little-known and infrequent perk that comes with my job: left-over school sack lunches.

Sure it’s a barely passable, assembly line-made lunch to an 8th grader; but to me it’s a kick-ass afternoon snack. Some are good (ham & cheese w/ name brand chips) and some are freakin’ horrible (peanut butter on white bread and crappy, stale chips). Today’s offering was of the highest caliber:

PB & Grape Jelly “Uncrustable”

Classic Lays potato chips

Big ol’ homemade Rice Crispy treat

Baby carrot sticks

A gala apple

Best. Afternoon snack. Ever.

Weekend Wrap Up

After far too many a moon have passed since I last saw Chris and Tiffany, Turner and I made a pilgrimage to Atlanta this past weekend to visit. Since there’s no real, linear story; I have the highlights. Check the bullet points, bitches!

--
The world is mine!!!!

I half-hammeredly kicked ass in Risk on Friday night. And as my first act as ruler of the world, I will name Rammstein the official band of the planet; which with my second act will be renamed “Funky Town.”

--
Goddamned Mongorians!

Turner wanted to visit some Chinese restaurant wholesale place to find some new décor for his house. He apparently is a huge fan of Happy Panda Family Express and wants to live there. We drove around Atlanta based on some stellar, Magellan-like directions from Turner’s dad, only to discover 45 minutes and 7 passes by REI later that the place was only like 5 minutes and a couple of streets away from Chris and Tiffany’s place.

I personally think that when all is said and done with his decorating, it’s gonna look like Turner robbed a Chinese restaurant.

Turner's always gracious enough to give you a fortune cookie when you leave.

--
“Always win.”

Chris bought an awesome Daniel-san headband at Turner’s Chinese wholesale place. I’m still lamenting the fact that I didn’t buy one as well. For the rest of the night (and now as well) I had that damned “You’re the best around…” song stuck in my head.

--
All in… and then all out

I suck at poker. I suppose if I actually played more I’d get better. But I have better things to do. And seriously, I thought I could have won with 3 8’s and a Jack. I really didn’t think Tiffany would have 3 aces. Thus the beauty and the horror that is poker.

--
Who am I?

Well, apparently after numerous incarnations of the “Who would you/I be?” games, I am:

Colonel Tigh

--

Registration Act

After a nerdgasim-inducing visit to Oxford Comics, I decided that if I ever get married; I'm going to make sure that my wife knows we're registered at Bed, Bath & Beyond, the GSU Bookstore, Oxford Comics and the nearest liquor store.

The above sentence also pretty much guarantees that I will never be married unless I strike up some desperate pact with Turner. But that will never happen as I don't want to live in a Chinese restaurant.
--
I was a part of the Speed Force

"Tilt" is waaaaay more interesting and effective than "Sparks". That shit whacked me the fuck out. But it works like a charm.

--

Turner unleashed.

Turner totally unloaded on a girl who said we were way too nerdy after she had already said that she watched Full Metal Alchemist with the subtitles on.
"Fuck. You!"

--

Rumble in the Bronx

This Bacon & Egg Cheeseburger at IHOP, while tasty, did far more damage to my stomach than all the beer and Tilt did.
---
That's all I've got right now. Man, Atlanta should seriously be a lot closer to Statesboro. These weekends are too few and far between.

You’re not a quitter if you never start

I’ve decided that I’m not giving up my beloved alcamahol for Lent. And it’s not because I have a problem. It’s more like because I have problems.

-There’s still a good bit of beer left in my fridge, and I refuse to throw away perfectly good Guinness. That’s like a sin or something.
-There’s also the impending unofficial SBDA national holiday of St. Patrick’s Day coming up. And it’s on a Saturday to boot, so that’s just asking for trouble.
-I’m going up to Atlanta this weekend to see the Masked Mofo, The Slut and Pretty Boy Slim; so it just wouldn’t be right if I didn’t let LC out to at least say “hey!”
-I’m thinking that I’m going to need to drown my sorrows sometime soon, and drowning them in fruit punch or green tea just doesn’t quite do it like how my second love can soothe me.
-Me likey to drinky.

Jesus won't weep for me falling off the wagon, but he'd kick my ass for throwing this away.

I still want to do it, so I may just have to find a consecutive 40 days and nights where nothing important is going to be happening or is planned. Then maybe I can prove to one and all that I actually can function for a month without alcohol, like... like someone who... wait... are there people who don't have alcohol in them for entended periods of time? *shudder*

So anyways, not doing it. In fact, I may go home and have a beer or 4 just to celebrate my non-quitting triumph thing or whatever the hell I'm doing or not doing.

Green Teas from Asbury Park

I’ve become pretty much addicted to Bigelow’s Green Tea (with lemon) as of late.

I started drinking it when I was sick a few weeks back in the hopes that maybe it would help me feel a little better. It did somewhat, but I’ve kept with it mostly because it relaxes me some while I’m at work and helps me unwind at home after a really crap day.

It’s by no means better than Sleepytime tea, but it and all its little antioxidants do the trick just fine when I need it to.

Hmmm... First BBC America, then drinking more Guinness than usual, add a new-found fascination with British slang, and now all this tea nonsense. I guess all I need is a tea pot and some biscuits/scones to help round out what appears to be my transformation into an Englishman. I suppose next time I go shopping I could pick some up along with some Earl Grey (hot).

Cheerio.

D

Spot the wrestling reference? It’s pretty clever if I do say so myself. Want a little help? It’s in here.

Certifiable

I’m taking a Heartsaver CPR course tonight that will hopefully bolster my chances for selection a little bit.

A 3 hour course that certifies me for 2 years and only costs $25? Just about can’t beat that… unless it was free… and I got to take it with a bunch of Playmates... and practice on them. But I’ll take what I can get.

And if it makes me a little more selection-worthy down in Savannah, then it’ll totally be worth it. If not, then I guess the worst is that I spent 12 & ½ big beers on it, missed going to the gym, and didn’t get to watch NCIS.

But at least I’ll be certified and I won’t have missed Dr. Who. Gotta start thinking positive.

A moment of silence and closed captioning please.

Inventor of the TV remote dies

Tonight, I shall perform a 21 channel salute.

D

This is spinal tap

Not so much this one...

A little more this one:

Interesting ways to spend a Sunday night does not include sitting in the emergency room for 6 & 1/2 hours (until 12:15am) with someone who's sick and ends up having to get a spinal tap to see if it's meningitis. Thank God it wasn't, because that would have really sucked if she had it and I was with her for that long a period of time while she was sick.

And seriously, if that didn't help me get mucho mucho brownie points, I don't know what the hell will.

D

Oh, and it's no one you guys know. And no I won't tell you.

Friday, February 16, 2007

I'm gonna be a daddy!!

Well, not really. But this is pretty much a creepy (and also possible) look into the future.

Chris was convinced after seeing the 40 Year Old Virgin, that if they ever made a movie about me or SBDA!, Seth Rogan would be the one to play me. And the first time I saw this trailer, the first thing I thought of was Chris just busting out laughing and saying something like "Holy crap! That's... that's pretty much you! Or at least what'll probably happen to you anyways. ...Sorry dude. But at least it'll be funny."

Knocked Up

And God help me... I think he's right.

D

Here's a club I can join

Finally got around to ordering Paranoid Social Club's self-titled CD.

I finally saw Beerfest the other day and "Wasted" was in the closing titles which reminded me that I needed to order the cd. I suppose if I had that laptop that I'm supposed to be ordering I could've gone and gotten it off itunes; but I don't have it yet, so I didn't.

A semi-keen aside: after I paid for the cd online, it let me download the whole thing onto the ol' puter and play it immediately. Well, I was supposed to be able to play it anyways. However there keeps being a licensing problem that's preventing me from playing them despite the fact that I already fucking paid for it. Godddamned DRM.

Guess I have to wait for the snail mail to get here then.

Vegas has me at 250:1 to actually finish

Lent is observed by the religious as a time to renew their faith by fasting and performing acts of penance during the observed and symbolic 40 days and nights that precede Easter and the resurrection of Christ.

Lent is also observed by jerkasses like me who’ve seen the Josh Hartnett movie 40 Days and 40 Nights way too many times, and every year toy with the idea of giving something up for a little over a month for no better reason than “just to see if I can.”

This year’s affront to the Catholic faith is such a doozy, that it deserves it’s own tagline in the vain of it’s founding inspiration:

“One man is about to do the unthinkable. No alcohol. Whatsoever. For... 40 Days and 40 Nights.”

That’s right, I’m thinking about going sober for the entirety of Lent.

*waiting for the laughter to subside*

Are you quite finished now? Good.

I know what you’re thinking: “Hahahaha…There’s absolutely no way you’ll pull this off. *snort* I mean, why didn’t you just go with chocolate or something a little less Odyssian like sex like in the movie? Heeheehee…”

To which I respond “I really don’t eat chocolate much anyways. And sex? Screw that! Booze is much easier for me to get. I’m not passing up sex! No way.”

But it’s not set in stone. I’ve still got until next Wednesday to make up my mind about if I really want to commit to the challenge. And even if I do take up the charge, it’s not like Jesus is gonna weep because I fell off the wagon again. Plus, if I want to, I can use my loopholes and observe the technicality that the 6 Sundays don’t count. Yeah that’s kinda cheating, but at the same time, perfectly within the rules.

But if you guys do start a pool on me like in the movie, let me know. I want in.

A Valentine for Nerds

D

Fine. Here’s your stupid Valentine’s card!

D

I think it, he says it.

It’s the grandest Hallmark Holiday of them all today. And in true anti-Valentine’s spirit, I present to you a “Name That” contest.

Name the show and character who said it and receive some sort of a classic Screw Big, Dumb American! type prize (and yes, I may even mail it to you if you’re one of my out of town readers).

“Molly, I'm narcissistic, I'm pessimistic, I'm obsessive, I'm insecure, and I am so afraid of intimacy that every one of my relationships is a journey of self-sabotage that inevitably ends in a black vacuum of shattered expectations and despair.”

Wow. That’s just one of those random quotes that you see or hear and it resonates with you. So much so that you end up tracking it down just to make sure that you remember it right and you start to obsess over it and begin an awkward journey of self-analysis that ends with you lying in a pool of despair/spilled beer, which only helps to further perpetuate your unwanted paranoia about Japanese people constantly watching you.

That or it’s just a good quote that I read too much into. I can never tell.

Name that show & character, win a prize!

I know we just got a Starbucks...

But when the hell are we gonna get one of these?!

I'd drive all the way across town every freakin' day to get coffee or hot, green tea if it were served to me by one of Statesboro's many hotties dressed like this:

"Sir, I'm going to need you to either order or move along."

"I still giggle every time she asks if I want cream."

"The restraining order keeps me from proposing any more..."

Guess I have to be proactive on this one. I think I'm gonna try and be a franchisee.

D

credit Paul for the head's up on this.

Can I get a spot over here?

After much consideration and several talks with Merritt about the CPAT (Candidate Physical Ability Test), I've decided to join a gym.

I've really gotta start prepping for some of the things I'll be required to do if I pass the written portion and get selected for the CPAT. A lot of that stuff will require some serious strength training and I also need to get on a first name basis with a StairMaster ("Hi, I'm D. You must be Death. Nice to meet you.").

The good news is that I don't think I need to do anything all that different from what I usually do at the gym, aside from the stairs. All the prep and training guides are showing pretty much exercise for exercise exactly what my previous routine was. All I gotta do is just start back on it.

So today, I'll go running and see how much my week off from being sick has screwed me; and tomorrow, I'll swing by 180 Fitness and see about a tour and possible trial membership before jumping in all the way. I think I can get a discounted rate as a government employee too. Although I know that no matter how much I do pay, I'll still probably use the hell out of the gym just because I am paying for it and I refuse to waste money that way.

Succinctly put...

Duke sucks!

D

The Sickening

Sorry about the lack of posts. I’ve been quasi-deathly ill.

Meant to play hooky on Monday after the Super Bowl, but woke up to find that the show had decided to actually go ahead and make me sick as a punishment for my insubordination.

No problemo I thought. Just a little cough and a stuffy nose, nothing major. 8 hours later and I’m freezing my balls off despite having every blanket and comforter that I can find on me. Must be a fever. Not good.

Tuesday morning comes and I can barely stand up, and when I do I’m weaving all over the place like, well, like me after way too many big beers. Add to that that my entire body is fatigued, sore as hell, still freezing, and I constantly wanna hurl; and I think it’s the flu.

So back to bed I go. Until about 6:45 that night. I spent roughly 20 hours in bed from Monday night to Tuesday night and that just about did the trick. Was back at work yesterday, although feeling pretty shitty and only because I really had to be; and today I feel about a hundred time better.

Still have a little congestion though, but hopefully it’s nothing I can’t kick out pretty quickly.

So there ya go. I was sick and I never actually played hooky. Don’t know if that evens me out karma-wise or not…

The "D" stands for "D'oh!"

Now I’m usually the first one to say that I’m a jackass; and quite often for many, many different reasons. This time it’s because I did something stupid at work. Go figure.

Savannah is taking applications for firefighter trainees again, and one of the required items to be submitted is a college transcript if applicable. It is for me, so I faxed in a request to the University for an official copy of my transcripts yesterday.

The trouble is that the first fax machine I used sucks and didn’t look like it went through. I waited around for a few minutes to see if a confirmation/error page would come back. Nothing did, so I figured that it didn’t work and there wouldn’t even be a confirmation/error page. So I went and used another machine that cranked one out quickly.

In all my rush to start gathering information, I forgot to go check one last time on that first machine. Lo and behold this morning when I walk in, sitting on my desk is the error report from the first machine.

Now this really wouldn’t be that big a deal if it weren’t for the portion of the request that I voluntarily filled out: “Reason for Transcript”. I went and checked “other” with “Job Application” written in the blank provided.

Sigh. I’m a jackass.

Hopefully, whoever put that on my desk didn’t look past the name and didn’t see my jackassedness openly acknowledging my covert job search. It probably doesn’t really matter all that much though, as I’m pretty damned sure that my boss knows what I’m up to, he’s just not saying anything. It’s one of those “You don’t know that I know that you know I know, you know?” situations I guess.

I’m sure if there’s any gossip or rumors flying around that they’ll inevitably get back to me at some point soon. And while I would normally use a tried and true favorite quote of “What’re they gonna do? Fire me?”, with all the changes being made around here, they just might. So this time I’ll do what I rarely do: tone down the brash cockiness, play it cool, and shut the fuck up.

D

And yes, I do present an air of “brash cockiness” at work. Just ask Zeke. Well ok, maybe “brash cockiness” is a wee bit of an exaggeration. It may be more like a continuous aura of “what-the-fuck-ever”, “piss off”, “hangovers sucks ass”, and “Good God I hate you.” But it can be easily confused as “brash cockiness”.

Tales of Dickery: The Never-ending beer

What’s better than dickery? Dickery with beer.

The Never-ending beer

One time after an event with a former employer, I went with a few co-workers (we’ll call them Lando and Zeke) to a seedy, little dive sports bar for dinner and a few beers. And before I get into the meat of this story, I have to tell you all that this dickery is going to be inflicted on Zeke and it involves him drinking beer. Zeke does not normally drink much. In fact, Zeke is what we in the imbibing community refer to as a “lightweight”.

So, Lando, Zeke and I get a table and we all decide to order some pitchers. We eat our dinner and continue to drink and make fun of anyone and everyone. All the while Zeke is drinking his beer. And he’s getting progressively drunker and drunker. And Lando and I are loving it.

You see, Zeke still thought he was working on his same beer the entire time. He hadn’t planned on drinking much, but every time he got up to go to the bathroom, I poured more beer into his glass (careful not to fill it as that would possibly tip him off). So there he is just drinking way more than he thought he was, all the time thinking that he’s on just one beer.

That went on for a good while, long enough for us to go through several pitchers; most of which went directly to Zeke to keep the fun going. After a while we headed back to the hotel and Zeke is absolutely smashed. And Zeke, being the lightweight that he is, is definitely headed for one hell of a hangover.

The next morning before the luncheon (with numerous people that we’re supposed to be impressing), I go up to Zeke’s room to check on him and drag him down to the lobby. I knock and he answers looking like somebody just threw him out of a moving vehicle, then someone else kicked him in the junk, while another person hosed him down with a fire hose, and a last person decided to try and dress him while they were wasted themselves. So, he didn’t look too good.

I walk in and hang out a few minutes while Zeke tries his best to function on a basic human level and finish getting ready. He comes over and I notice that his tie is all kinds of crooked; so I do the nice thing and adjust it for him. Apparently I tightened it just the right amount so that both the tie and my hand hit his throat in just the right manner that sent him into vomit mode. He spins around on his heels and takes off for the bathroom (I’ve never seen him move that fast before). He yarfs, brushes his teeth again, and thanks me sarcastically for helping him with his tie.

The rest of my morning and early afternoon was spent watching Zeke try to impress a table full of people while he looked (and I’m sure felt worse than) death warmed over. I kinda enjoyed myself for that morning and afternoon.

Yet again, I’m a dick.

Do you guys have “Margarita Fridays”?

I applied for a job at Primatech Paper yesterday.

They sent me a follow up email letting me know that they’d contact me after evaluating my application.

I wonder how it’s gonna turn out. I’ll probably just get rejected on account of my not having any cool powers. Let’s face it: being able to pat my head and rub my belly at the same time isn’t quite the same as being able to make somebody punch themselves in the face repeatedly just because I told them to.

D

Get the defibrillator!

I think that the NHL is really flatlining here in the States. And apparently no one’s in a hurry to try and save it.

The NHL All-Star Game was last night, but I saw no promotions/commercials/anything for it prior to the single commercial I happened to catch on G4 about 2 hours before the puck was dropped. And the game itself was carried on Vs on a weeknight instead of on ABC or ESPN on a weekend like it used to be. That couldn’t have helped it much.

And don’t they usually have some sort of skills contest or Legends or Rookies Game before the main event? Never heard about any of that either. Hell, I didn’t even see any highlights of it this morning on Sportscenter.

I guess the NHL is starting to cut its losses on trying to increase viewership outside the major hockey cities (Boston, Detroit, New York, Chicago, Canada, etc) and may be moving to really try and hold in to the hardcore hockey fans.

Maybe they should try a last ditch effort like the MLS did with Beckham, and bring in a huge spectacle to spike the numbers. I vote for adding two expansion teams, one made up of gorillas and the other bears. That ought to do it.

Tales of Dickery: "Our Best Boy"

“Our Best Boy”

Ah, PJ- mine and Chris’ good for nothing, good intentioned, and good natured, artard of a teammate and classmate. And let me go on record as saying: “Chris, he was your guy.”

PJ is the mayne, I mean man, responsible for coming up with some of the most asinine ideas for shooting our videos, failing to help out editing in anyway, totally screwing up everything he actually shot and edited, and totally hooking Chris and I on pronouncing the word “man” as “mayne” (as in Kenny Mayne from Sportscenter) or possibly “main”. I really don’t know how to spell it, as it’s developed its own sound over the years. Let’s just say if you’ve ever heard us say it, you know what I’m going for here.

But he was a sweetheart and also the butt of a collective dickeration on the part of Chris, myself and our other teammate, Matt. And I’ll never once apologize for it.

Our team was at the end of the semester of our Video 2 class, and we were working on our final project, a “how to” video for running the college radio station booth. We were in the editing stages, and were getting to the credits of the video, when PJ pretty much for the first time since the start of the project sticks his head in the booth and asks if we need his help.

“No, we’re good. You can get back to whatever it was that you were doing.”

“Ok, mayne.”

Chris and I had long ago decided that we didn’t need PJ and that cutting him out entirely from the whole process was no loss and just getting rid of excess parts from a well oiled machine. Any time Matt questioned the decision, we just reminded him of PJ’s awesome idea to get a shot in our very first video (“Hey, mayne. Why don’t we mount the camera to the ceiling so we can get the overhead shot that way?”) It never took more than that.

So there we were putting in the closing credits, thanking the lab tech who helped us, one of our other classmates with something, and then it came time to deal with PJ.

Matt: “Hey, we forgot to put PJ’s name with ours in the credits.”

Me: “No we didn’t.”

Matt: “Yeah we did. You put you, me and Chris but not PJ.”

Chris: “We didn’t forget him, because he’s not going in there with us. We can put him somewhere else.”

Matt: “Man, that’s wrong.”

Me: “Fuck him. What’d he do anyways? Even when he was here, he just stood around not doing anything or messing up what he did do.”

Matt: “But still…”

Chris: “Fine. He goes in, but not with us. He gets his own ‘special’ credit.”

Me: “How about ‘Our Best Boy’?”

Matt: “That’s messed up.”

Chris: “It’s perfect.”

Me: “It’s done.”

Matt: “Aw, man…”

Me: “You mean, ‘Aw, mayne..’ don’t you?”

A few days later and the class is watching the final videos. As per usual, ours is wiping the floor with everyone else’s’, minor audio glitch aside (that was so not our fault, and Reed agreed with us).

We get to the credits, PJ sees his, and I hear a little “Huh?” come from him. After the class is over, PJ comes to us and started the brief exchange:

PJ: “Mayne, what was with that ‘Best Boy’ stuff? I thought I was supposed to be with y’all on that.”

Chris: “You thought wrong.”

PJ: “But mayne, I helped you guys do all that stuff.”

Chris: “Bullshit. You helped yourself and your friends do whatever the hell it was that you were doing instead of helping us.”

PJ: “But I’m your teammate. I should get the same credit as you guys.”

Matt: “Not really.” (Way to go, Matt. Way to let him have it.)

Me (in a loud enough voice for the whole room to hear): “Look, if you don’t like it, you should have been there to stop us. We’re done here.”

-----

We did eventually tell our professor that we wanted PJ to get the same grade that we did (an A as usual) despite his efforts (or lack thereof). So everything worked out for everyone: we made another great video, we all got our standard issue A, and I got another Tale of Dickery.

Don’t you just love happy endings?

A whole new level of Dickery

I’ve been racking my brain for some new editions of Tales of Dickery that involved my brother and I. But I’ve been drawing a big ol’ blank for some reason. But after a talk with my long distance, hetero life mate, Chris; we decided that dickery didn’t have to be limited to just what I did to Stuart. In fact, dickery probably works best when it’s been done to me. I mean, this is “Screw Big, Dumb American!” after all…

But I like it best when it’s done to other people for a change. So to tempt Karma more so than usual, I’ve decided to keep ToD rolling along with random things that I can remember doing to various people. And of course, the occasional dickeration of yours truly.

So be on the lookout for some new and improved…

Tales… of… Dickery!!!!
